Transitioning to Kindergarten
When the month of August rolls around, families with young children start to think about going back to school. The biggest transition for many families is when their child goes to kindergarten. Once children are out of preschool, they are ready for the next step. You can help your child with that next step by coming to the public library, going for a story walk or visiting your child’s new elementary school playground.
The Westwood Public Library Children’s Department has a full list of great books about going to kindergarten. It is a wonderful place to come in late summer after a day of outdoor activities. You may even see a few other kindergarten bound children while you are here! These are my favorite books about kindergarten:
Look Out Kindergarten, Here I Come by Nancy Carlson
A Place Called Kindergarten by Jessica Harper
Kindergarten Countdown by Anna Jane Hays
The Kissing Hand by Audrey Penn
Welcome to Kindergarten by Anne Rockwell
You can also countdown to kindergarten with a Story Walk! Walk along the beautiful new walking path at the Deerfield School and read the story Miss Bindergarten Gets Ready for Kindergarten by Joseph Slate. The Story Walk will be available through the entire month of August. It starts at the gate at the library parking lot and ends near the Deerfield playground. You and your kindergartener can enjoy your walk, discuss the story then come visit the library when you are done!
Another idea to help your child transition into kindergarten would be to take him or her to the playground at the school that they will attending. I did that with both of my daughters and that helped get them comfortable with being outside of the school. As they were playing on the equipment, we talked about their new school and what they are looking forward to doing in kindergarten.
In Westwood, kindergarten students ease into the school day for the first few weeks. Give your child the chance to rest or play after school with a friend. We would love to see you and your child at the Westwood Public Library for some nice quiet time reading or looking at books! Then, your child will be ready to enjoy the new school year and being a kindergartener.
