Do-It-Yourself Halloween Storytime At Home

Do-It-Yourself Halloween Storytime At Home Banner Photo

Halloween marks the first out of several special events that are quickly approaching, which we as librarians have tons of fun using as the basis for our fall programming.  We look forward to reading, singing and dancing with our patrons using haunted themes such as spiders, pumpkins and scarecrows to celebrate the festivities!  As a parent, I understand hectic schedules may not have the room to squeeze in a visit to the library and you may miss our October storytimes although you've enjoyed them in the past.  Many families are busy running from here to there and with the holiday season slowly creeping upon us, our “To Do” list is expanding by the second.  It's a common dilemma during the last segment of the calendar but just because you can't join us for an organized activity, there's no reason why you can't host your own.  By browsing this list of books, rhymes and melodies, you'll be able to plan your own spooky storytime from the comfort of your home thereby duplicating these fun and educational literacy soirees.  If you are interested in becoming your kids' personal instructor for a “BOO” themed storytime, you can specifically tailor the agenda by taking a look at some of these classic Halloween gems our department cherishes!

Fun Halloween Themed Rhymes and Songs:

“Five Little Pumpkins”

Five little pumpkins sitting on a gate;

The first one said, "Oh my, it's getting late".

The second one said, "There are witches in the air".

The third one said, "But I don't care".

The fourth one said, "I'm ready for some fun!"

The fifth one said, "Let's run and run and run".

"Wooooooo" went the wind,

And out went the lights.

And the five little pumpkins rolled out of sight.

“Zoom, Zoom, Climb on to my Broom”

Zoom, Zoom, Zoom

(rub hands together, back and forth while pointing them up in the air)

Climb on to my broom.

Zoom, Zoom, Zoom

Climb on to my broom.

If you want to fly tonight,

To catch a spook and give a fright.

Zoom, Zoom, Zoom

Climb on to my broom.

5, 4, 3, 2, 1,

(hold 5 fingers up and count down)

“We Are Pumpkins Big and Round”

We are pumpkins big and round,

Big and Round, Big and Round!

We are pumpkins big and round, sitting on the ground.

See our great big shiny eyes,

Shiny Eyes, Shiny Eyes!

See our great big shiny eyes, looking right at you.

See our great big laughing mouth,

Laughing Mouth, Laughing Mouth!

See our great big laughing mouth, smiling right at you.

“The Itsy Bitsy Spider”

The itsy bitsy spider

Climbed up the waterspout

Down came the rain

And washed the spider out

Out came the sun

And dried up all the rain

And the itsy bitsy spider

Climbed up the spout again!
