​Westwood Library is Fine Free!
The Westwood Public Library is delighted to announce that we are now officially fine free!
Westwood Library has paused collecting late fees on items since we reopened during the Covid Pandemic. Our new Fine Free policy makes permanent our current practices. How does it work? Beginning November 1st 2023, items borrowed at both the Main Library and Islington Branch will not be charged late fees. This includes items owned by other libraries in the Minuteman Network that are checked out in Westwood, and it applies to everyone checking out materials at Westwood Library, regardless of residency. However, if you go to another library in the Minuteman Network and check out materials there, those materials will be subject to that library’s policies. You will still receive due-date reminders when materials are renewed or due to be returned.
Please note that items checked out from Westwood that remain long overdue will still be billed for replacement fees, as will significantly damaged materials. If long overdue items are returned, the replacement fees will disappear.
This new initiative aligns with the Board’s commitment to library services and access to information for Westwood residents and the approved Strategic Plan. It will also provide economic relief during a time of rising prices and growing inflation. This change is part of a national library industry movement, guided by the recommendations of the American Library Association, to increase public access to library services.
Removing fines is a major step in our continual efforts to make the Library as equitable, accessible, and welcoming an environment as possible. We thank the Library Trustees and the Town of Westwood for approving this new policy. We are so pleased to be a fine free library!
Does “Fine Free” mean I can keep books and items as long as I want?
Even though we are no longer collecting late fees, any item that is more than 30 days overdue may still be billed as a lost item. Please bring your items back promptly so others may enjoy them.
Will I still get a notification that my library book is due soon?
YES! We will still send you friendly reminders that your books are due soon or are overdue.
